Linguistic validation of PRO and eCOA instruments
A quality-of-life questionnaire only works in another country if it measures the same thing. Linguistic validation ensures that every item, instruction and response option is understood by participants in Portugal as the instrument developer intended.
I take part in the different steps of the process, following ISPOR good practice and the developer’s specifications, with the attention to register that a self-completed questionnaire requires.
What it covers
- Forward translations and reconciliation
- Review and cross-language harmonisation
- PRO, ClinRO and ObsRO instruments and participant diaries
- On-screen review of electronic versions (eCOA)
Frequently asked questions
- What is linguistic validation?
- It is the process that makes an outcome assessment questionnaire conceptually equivalent to the original in a new language. It usually involves independent translations, reconciliation, back translation, review, cognitive interviews with people from the target population and a final proofread.
- Do you follow ISPOR good practice?
- Yes, as well as any specific instructions from the instrument developer or the company managing the process.
