Medical and regulatory translation into European Portuguese.

Clinical trials, regulatory documentation and outcome assessment instruments, translated and reviewed by a specialist with over twenty years in the field — with the terminology, register and standards of the Portuguese used in Portugal.

English · German · Spanish → European Portuguese

A segment under review

A text can be correct and still not be European Portuguese. Review catches what machine translation and memories built for other markets let through.

“contate” and “seu” without the article are Brazilian Portuguese markers; European Portuguese uses “contacte” and “o seu”.

Services

Translation

From English, German and Spanish into European Portuguese, with terminology checked against client references, EMA QRD templates and MedDRA.

Review and LQA

Bilingual review of the full file — not sampling — and linguistic quality assessment with an error report by category and severity.

Post-editing

Full post-editing of machine translation (MTPE), held to the same standard as human translation for publishable text.

Linguistic validation

PRO, ClinRO and eCOA instruments: translation, reconciliation, review and harmonisation, following ISPOR good practice.

Luxury localisation

Cosmetics, fragrance and fashion: product copy, campaigns and packaging, in the brand register the Portuguese market expects.

By field

Documents I work with

  • Informed consent forms (ICFs) and paediatric assent forms
  • Protocols, synopses and amendments
  • Clinical trial agreements (CTAs) and budgets
  • SmPCs, package leaflets and labelling (QRD)
  • PRO / eCOA instruments and participant diaries
  • Medical device and IVD documentation (IVDR)
  • Participant materials and investigator letters
  • Promotional and training materials

European Portuguese, not just “Portuguese”

A document for participants in Portugal has to sound like Portugal. These are some of the differences I find most often in files that come in for review:

BrazilianEuropean
not prontuário médicoprocesso clínico
not exame de sangueanálise ao sangue
not plano de saúdeseguro de saúde
not contatarcontactar
not equipe do estudoequipa do estudo
not celulartelemóvel
not aplicativoaplicação
not registrarregistar

Method

  1. Analysis

I read the request, instructions and references: glossaries, memories, previous study documents, QRD templates.

  2. Translation

I translate with the agreed terminology and raise queries with the project manager rather than guessing.

  3. Full review

I review the whole file, segment by segment, against the source — not a sample.

  4. QA checks

Numbers, units, dates, tags, terminology consistency and Brazilian Portuguese markers, with automated checks and a final read.

  5. Delivery

I deliver on time, with notes on the decisions made and any points the client should confirm.
